Vote for me, Anna B
“So vote for me, Anna B and make this a year to remember." Modest applause echoes
through the gym as I finish my Sophomore Class Presidential election speech. Slightly
shaking, and with the eyes of 450 fellow students still boring into me, I maneuvered the
microphone back onto the stand and took my seat next to the three other candidates.
It is during our adolescence, primarily high school, in which we make our first discoveries
of who we are and who we wish to be. Desperately seeking acceptance and a sense of
community, most obey the social status quo. Starting fresh as a transfer student, with the
freedom to begin my high school experience anew, I decided to run for Class President.
Although Student Government elections are usually facades for popularity contests, and
my competition included one of the most beautiful girls in school, my determination and
passion for leadership outweighed the risk of utter failure and defeat. I submitted the
required application, and my first political campaign endeavor began. I would be class
president.
My mother’s eyes lit up when I relayed the news of my decision. Delighted that her
daughter was subjecting herself to definite judgment and possible embarrassment in
exchange for leadership, self accomplishment, and pride, she congratulated me with
affection…and then, still smiling, slightly shook her head as she walked away.
Sara, my older sister who was visiting from GA Tech, immediately offered her assistance.
With her unfaltering gregariousness and wit, my previous apprehensions of writing a
