Am I There Yet?
My name is Evan Borgen, and I come from two different countries. What I mean by that
is my father was born and raised in the United States of America, and my mother was born and
raised in Canada. Both sides are well represented in my lifestyle. The more that I go about my
life, I’m finding more and more things about me that are associated with my mother’s side. Now
I know that since I live in Minnesota and am around my dad’s family more, I tend to act more
American. But, I go up to see my family in Canada twice a year, and when I go I quickly become
a Canadian. Simple attributes such as language and habits make me this way. I find myself
saying “A” after sentences and statements. I am proud to be part Canadian. It is nothing to big
and special, but I love being able to talk about, and represent part of my heritage. In 2012, my
oldest brother and his wife moved up to Nanaimo, BC. He took a ownership job my uncle
offered him. He has created a family up there and is thriving. I have a really good connection
with him and I also idolize him and his business. The culture in Nanaimo is completely different
than the Fargo/Moorhead area. I have dreams of moving out there and starting my life, just like
he did. Minnesota will always be my home, but I find myself exploring and taking my life
somewhere else.
I thought about going to college out there as well, but Concordia caught my eye and I
believe it was the best decision I have ever made. Yes, there are times where I wish I was going
to school in a warm and beautiful place year-round, but that’s a minor thing. I have learned a lot
about myself at Concordia. I will be entering my third year this upcoming fall and I have created
a life at Concordia that I wouldn’t want to change. The Offutt School of Business is an amazing
school that focuses on getting student ready for life after college. The high job rate out of
Concordia is one of its best features. It definitely makes one feel safer with their college
decision. I have loved every business course that I have taken, and every one of them has helped
me develop my knowledge of the business world. Outside of my major has been a different story.
Last spring I failed two core classes. One of them being a religion course. That class might have
been the hardest class I have ever taken. I know there was a handful of kids that didn’t pass. I am
a good learner and am capable of understanding new material, but the professor was unbearable.
He would teach one thing, and test on different things. That class really put me in a bad place
educationally and mentally. It was exhausting. Ever since that class I have changed my entire
