“This is one small step for man. One giant leap for mankind.” Neil Armstrong said those
words to controllers right as he was becoming the first man to step foot on the moon. This
may not have been possible if it weren’t John F. Kennedy’s declaration on May, 25th 1961
in front of a joint congress that he wanted a man on the moon by the end of the decade. It
was Kennedy’s words that set off a space race between the Americans and Russians. This
race wasn’t just about getting to the moon first but about who had the superiority
throughout the world. The stage set for Apollo 11 was years in the making. It took
thousands of engineers and countless hours to make the right rockets and everything else
that would be needed that could put a man on the moon. It also took the lives of 3
astronauts in Apollo 1 to help develop a new capsule to house the astronauts. Apollo 11
was finally set for launch on July 17, 1969 with Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Mike
Collins on board. They took off on a 3 day journey to the moon in what is considered one
of the greatest moments of American history. The trip was not without obstacles though as
