Emotion is key to all that is beautiful. The strength of a piece depends on how the artist
portrays certain emotions. Sometimes it’s through color, or tone, or the pure image. In the
TV Series Vampire Diaries every episode is filled with love, lust, despair, loss, and so on.
It is a complex and emotional show. An episode in particular is Episode 19 of Season 3. Up
to this point there has been a lot of build up throughout the seasons. There are three main
characters: Stefan, Damon, and Elena. Stefan and Damon are brothers that were turned
into vampires over 100 years ago. Elena is human, but fell in love with Stefan. Damon
throughout the seasons has been portrayed as the ‘bad guy,’ but when Stefan lost himself,
Damon was there to comfort Elena. She began to have feelings for him, so Stefan had
them go away so she could figure out what she felt for Damon. In a specific scene in the
episode there is a very tense and emotional moment between Elena and Damon.
To take a break from a long trip, Elena and Damon stopped at a motel. At the beginning of
the scene Elena is laying in bed watching Damon as he pours himself a drink. He takes a
peek out the window before sitting down. Elena was just staring at Damon doing
something he normally does. He noticed her looking so she looked away for a moment, but
then looked back at him. Damon gets up and lays next to Elena in the bed. They exchange
a conversation where Elena says “Why don’t you let people see the good in you?”
Damon responds with saying, “Because when people see good, they expect good and I
don’t want to have to live up to anyone’s expectations. After he said this Elena rolled onto
her back to look at the ceiling. This is when Damon touched her hand. She let it happen,
but then went running out of the room. Damon followed her out of the room.
“Don’t,” she says.
Damon replies with asking, “Why not?…Elena?” At this moment Elena turns around and
runs over to him and kissed him passionately.
This scene does a particularly fantastic job with portraying different emotions and making
the viewer relate. When watching this scene is it easy to look past all the little details, but
the little details are what make this scene so powerful. The lighting, music, and stage
