UW Symphony – Porgy and Bess
In the Overture to West Side Story composed by Leonard Bernstein, the beginning has a
definite bright and cheerful timbre with more prominent instruments such as the trumpet, violin,
percussion, and muted trombones. The French horn is also heard to be part of the melody here,
but not as prominent. The dynamics start with a definite forte, if not fortissimo, then get softer
with a Metso forte to a piano to isolate certain instruments while others help maintain the overall
