What is Utilitarianism?
Utilitarianism is a tradition of ethical philosophy, that is stemming from Jeremy
Bentham and John Stuart Mill, two late 18th- and 19th-century British
philosophers and economists. It is a species of consequentialism, the general
doctrine in ethics that actions should be evaluated on the basis of their
consequences. Utilitarianism promotes actions that bring happiness or pleasure
while opposing actions that bring misery or harm. Hence, it moves beyond the
scope of one's own interests and takes into account the interests of others. It
requires us to consider the consequences to determine the morality of an action and
claim that the morality of an action is determined by the amount of "goodness"
produced by the activity. According to utilitarianism, an action is right if it leads to
the happiness of the largest number of people in a society or group.
Do you favor for Utilitarianism? Why or Why not?
In my point of view, I do not support utilitarianism.
Utilitarianism requires that people assign values to the benefits and harms resulting
from their actions and compare them with the benefits and harms that might result
from other actions. But it's difficult, if not impossible, to measure and compare the
