Background
Groupon is an American online deal marketplace and was founded in November of 2008 by Eric
Lefkofsky, Andrew Mason, and Brad Keywell that connects subscribers with local merchants
offering goods, services, activities and travel in 15 countries. (Wikipedia, 2018) Groupon
appeals to their subscribers by drumming up deeply discounted “deals” with the local merchants.
In 2010, Groupon went internationally and had 35 million registered users and by December of
2010, Forbes magazine and the Wall Street Journal reportedly projected that “[Groupon] is on
pace to make $1 billion in sales faster than any other business, ever.” (Weiss, 2010) Groupon
appeals to their local merchants with immediate profit, massive online SEO and an abundance of
possible new customers with email subscriptions. But there is always a catch to a really great
deal…
Many business operate in the grounds of, “if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is,”
but there are many businesses that walk along the edge of prosperity and bankruptcy, and it’s
those businesses that Groupon seeks out for their collective buying business model. The catch is
giving them more than half of sales the business makes from one of their highly marketed online
social deals. Groupon markets its model and it’s local merchants through an email subscribers
list. They have redesigned their business model at least twice. I happen to know the ways of
Groupon not only from a little research but also because I was and currently am one of their
