US History
The 1920’s was the time period when science, religion, and society of United States had to
face lots of changes. Women’s rights and role had been changed, movement of Popular
Culture, Prohibition and educational change occurred in the 1920’s. As it was the moment
of changes in all area, United States had to face the differences and difficulties between
their own tradition and modernity.
America was growing so rapidly, New York’s population was about 5.6 million at the
1920’s. The urban people argued about the scientific and social issues, judging one another
by accomplishment. Also, drinking and gambling were going on in the city that rural
people might be shocked. Because these drinking have caused so many problems, it
became serious social issue and the social atmosphere of unable to control oneself such as
getting drunk seemed as sinful thing, the amendment was launched known as the
Prohibition. It seemed to make the city clean, but in fact it caused the mafias to become
untouchably big and corruption deep rooted in the government. American government
tried to modernize themselves by making such laws of prohibition, but it was too ideal that
people couldn’t follow. It can be seen as the side effect of not regarding to base on the
traditional style of living and improve so that people can change step by step.
Meanwhile, young women, who embraced the new fashions and urban attitudes, were
called the flapper. This new ideal influenced many women to smoke cigarettes, able to
drink in public, open-minded with talking about sex, and thoughts about marriage life.
