The Connected Knower
One idea that I found stood out to be from the lecture “Symbols, Values, and Meaning” was the
idea that culture, in general, is based on different symbols and what those symbols mean to us in
our specific culture. I found this stood out to me because I have really never thought much about
what symbols were and what different ones meant to me. I also never thought about how a
certain symbol could mean so much to me and have such a large impact and to others, it could
have no meaning at all. In the video, I learned more about what symbols actually were and how
many different things or ideas could qualify as a symbol. I always thought that a symbol had to
be almost like a logo, but now I know that it can really be anything as long as it has meaning
behind it. For example, I never thought about how an action or phrase could be a symbol.
The second piece of information I pulled away from the video “Symbols, Values, and Meaning”
was how many different ways culture can shape us. I learned that culture does affect every piece
of our lives and how we personally view things. For example, in the video, you mention that
