firms. This reputation has built on the basis of the firm living in strong values and culture
that supports these values. The CEO Ralph Larsen credits the success to the J&J credo. He
argues that the credo is the glue that holds their decentralized company together. He further
clarifies that the company’s management has relied on the credo in managing the several
products, people and profits by the company. The code helps the J&J Company
conceptualize their total commitment to the company.
Our credo was first founded by General Robert Wood Johnson, who guidedJ&J business to
a worldwide enterprise. He wrote in the pamphlet “Try Reality” that the industrialists’
responsibility should be to customers, employees, the community, and stockholders.
Johnson later documented J&J credo in which he highlighted his philosophy in details. He
argued that putting customers first could enhance the more service delivery. The credo has
heavily been used in management guidance and has been relied on crisis times like the
TYLENOL crisis of 1982.
