Unfulfilled Promises
As stated in “The Declaration of Independence,” “all men are created equal.” This was
the “truth” the Founding Fathers built America on. However, this was not evident with slave
populations growing in the new country. Owning slaves as property with the British King
overseeing the slave trade was indeed enslavement of men. Jefferson and many others
recognized this as a contradiction with the founding principle (Waldstreicher 103). Sojourner
Truth was one of many who fought to actually make the so-called “truth” true. In “Ain’t I a
Woman?” and “Address to the First Annual Meeting of the American Equal Rights Association,”
Truth points out that if America does not change its way to allow equality for all people, it will
stay stuck in solving the same problem over and over. Even after the freedom of black slaves,
Sojourner Truth found it disturbing that women of all races were still subordinate to men
