Why is underemployment a major problem in the United States?
Per the article “Lost Generation”, there is an estimation of 6.7 million American youths
that are unemployed. Those 6.7 million American’s therefore are not paying taxes. The
article also stated as a result this causes $1.6 trillion dollars tax payers have to pay. This
will cause tax payers to lose more monthly income, and make financial stability decrease.
Most middle class American’s currently struggle to make “ends” meet as it is, and
increased taxes do not help matters. Especially if someone is employed, but was laid off
from a previous job and now makes less than before.
Is a college degree necessary to compete in today’s workforce? Explain.
Yes a college degree is necessary to compete in the workforce. The article states a couple
of reasons why this is a true statement. First a person would have double the chance at
finding employment with a college degree than a person with no college degree. Another
example that proves this is a true statement is the person in the article, Mr. Wetherell states
at his current job more college graduates are working at the same supermarket chain. If
these are the only jobs a college graduate is able to obtain, then how are non-graduates
going to compete for the same job? A college graduate is most likely to be hired for the
position than a non-graduate.
