Every day the majority of college students feel some amount of stress caused by the
responsibilities they have to complete in an academic setting. Pressure significantly affects
personal health in both the mind and body, making it highly important to recognize how to cope
with daily anxieties in college. A key component to the body which is affected by tension
comprises of the digestive system. It contains more neurons than the spinal cord, meaning
additional signals from the brain provide pathways to your stomach. Stabilizing stress levels
through a variety of options on campus or individualistic methods is necessary to keep a healthy
lifestyle. Knowledge of the impacts of anxiety heightens one’s awareness for their bodies and
how it is critical to understand what can be done to prevent the issues stress causes.
The article first explains how the stomach is adversely affected by worry through
physical complications, constant stress may cause. The stomach is controlled by the central
nervous system, along with the neurons directly within the intrinsic nervous system, lining much
of the digestive tract. The processes the intrinsic nervous system aids in digestion are:
swallowing, breaking down food with enzymes, and determining food contents as nutrients or
waste. College students who are under stress throughout each semester can observe the effects
their strain carries out amongst various digestive processes. Anxiety leads to issues like bloating,
cramping, inflammation, loss of appetite, symptoms undergraduate college students will most
likely experience during their four years. Stress also causes bodily changes that may include
heightened state of awareness, faster heart rate and breathing, higher blood pressure, increase of
blood cholesterol, and tense muscles. Chronic cases of anxiety have produced decrease of blood
flow and oxygen to the stomach, causing cramming, inflammation, and imbalanced levels of
bacteria in the intestines. Disorders are equally possible to increase from consistent chronic stress
present in students lives like inflammatory bowel disease and peptic ulcers, leading to agonizing
pain in individuals. As stress is prevalent in a college student's daily life, comprehending the
ways to prevent all these problematic occurrences will help in the long-term to provide self-care.

The article explains six ways to manage stress with the first being getting regular exercise
to aid the body in relieving the impacts of anxiety. Exercising releases endorphins which
naturally relieve pain and can reduce stress, while also relaxing the muscles. Students at FSC can
exercise regularly at the Wellness Center, either personally working out or attending the variety
of group exercise classes available during the week. Another option for students is to run or bike
around Lake Hollingsworth to receive the benefits to reduce some of the stress faced in the life
of a college student. Therapy is the second way suggested to help everyday anxieties, specifically
cognitive behavioral therapy. Cognitive behavioral therapy is replacing negative thoughts with
positive ones, gaining a pleasanter outlook on the day’s tasks to be completed. On campus the
counseling center offers free therapy sessions for students to schedule if wanted, to develop goals
and focus on accomplishments. Visiting Riley the therapy dog represents another service
