When the founding fathers, specifically James Madison, conceptualized and
eventually drafted a model for the U.S. Constitution they did so because they felt the
articles of confederation were too weak. The Articles of Confederation did not do
enough to protect the individual liberties of American citizens. Once the constitution
went into the effect on September 17, 1787 American citizens automatically gained
