Was it necessary for the United States to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and
Nagasaki in 1945? I believe it was necessary. Although, the atomic bombs are the worst
things invented, I believe it was the most effective solution. President Truman’s reason for
using the atomic bomb on Japan was that he believed countless allied lives would be saved
while delivering all people who were under the Japanese rule. President Truman gave
Japan a chance to surrender, not once, but twice. They did not agree so he went on with the
plan to use explosive bombs on Japan. The first bomb dropped on Hiroshima on August
6th, 1945 and since Japan still did not agree to surrender after the first bomb, President
Truman dropped the second bomb on August 9th, 1945 in Nagasaki, and then finally Japan
surrendered. Although it was a terrible decision for President Truman to agree on, it was
the most effective and quickest way to end the war.
Although President Truman went on with his plan to use atomic bombs on Japan, he had
many alternatives other than just bombing Japan to end the war. One alternative was to
bomb and blockade the islands. General MacArthur felt that the air power alone could
force the Japanese to surrender within six months with little risks to American lives.
Although I believe this would have been the best decision, it could have taken longer to
end the war. Another alternative idea was to modify the unconditional surrender that could
have been effective as well, this was essential because of the dedication of the Japanese
