The managers can redesign jobs in order to motivate employees based on the propositions of
Job Characteristics Model (JCM). The core dimensions of job characteristics model are skill
variety, task identity, task significance, autonomy, and job feedback.
1. Skill variety refers to the use of different skills and talents to complete a variety of
work activities. For example, manager will assign sales clerk who normally only serve
customers, duties of stocking inventory and changing storefront display while sales
supervisor will be assigned to supervises and coordinates the daily activities of sales.
2. Task identity is the degree to which a job requires completion of a whole piece of
work. Manager assign the employees who are involved in an activity from start to
finish are usually more satisfied. For example, the accountant that writing an entire
report would be more satisfying than just formatting.
3. Task significance is the degree to which the job affects the organization and exerts a
positive impact or others. For example, there is a project for developing a website, the
manager can assign a designer creates a website layout. This task is related and
significant to other tasks, such as coding, content writing, and others. The project
cannot be developed until the designer completes the tasks. The significance of the
designer’s task determines how soon and in what order other employees such as
coders, copywriters will start or continue doing their tasks.
4. Autonomy is the degree to which a job gives employees the freedom, independence
