Homework Assignment #1
8-9. A Question of Ethics – Copyright Infringement
Does a copy shop violate copyright law…
No, there are copy shops everywhere (including Kisko’s FedEx) that allows customers to make their own
copies. The stores have machines all around that have simple steps on how to make copies with an easy
1,2,3 virtual walk thru. Some stores may have a disclaimer somewhere on the machine reminding
customers of copyright laws. In addition, if a store didn’t have those kiosk or DIY machines the attending
could receive backlash for eavesdropping or breaching the consumers privacy. If it were a stack of
photos of (just an example) blatant child pornography then it is understandable for the
employee/company to interrupt service and not copy the material, contact law enforcement and take
any other necessary procedures they deem appropriate. This situation is different, it’s a stack of bland
black and white papers that probably have small font and basically seems uninteresting.
