Writing Project 3: Informative Essay
During a TED conference, model and transgender rights activist Geena Rocero
describes what is was like growing up as a transgender woman. She describes a situation that
many can relate to, “All of us are put in boxes by our family, by our religion, by our society, our
moment in history, even our own bodies. Some people have the courage to break free, not to
accept the limitations imposed by the color of their skin or by the beliefs of those that surround
them.” (Rocero) With a supportive group of friends and family, Geena admittedly had an easier
time “breaking free” than most transgender people. The majority of transgender men and women
experience difficulties and discrimination in every aspect of their life. An average United States
citizen will take for granted that they are able to get a job, meet with a doctor, or advance their
