ADULT LEARNING THEORY
Adults learns differently from kids. Surprisingly, a lot of corporate training are based loosely
on models of education found in schools which is called Pedagogy. Pedagogy which is also
called “leading children”, is the approach to teach children and youth. It gives the instructor
the major responsibility in making decision about learning content as well as understanding
students and their needs. In school, students learn because they are placed in an
environment that prods them to do so. They are placed in classroom, matched with other
students who are roughly the same age and same level of expertise and expected to do
nothing but learn for the majority of the time they are there. Most of motivation is external,
meaning that children go through this process to please their parents and teachers (at least
until they mature and see the value of learning itself).
In teaching adults, we need different approach, which is called andragogy. Andragogy refers
to the theory of adult learning. The word comes from the Greek ἀνδρ-, meaning “man”, and
ἀγωγός, meaning “leader of”, literally means “leading man”. When adult chooses or learns
something, it is because they see the value in that something. There is biological evidence
that certain mental capacities decrease in adult age. Short-term memory and speed ability
are decline. However, with age comes experience, which can compensate for the loss of
