Touching in the Dark
In the poem “First poem for You” by Kim Addonizio reflects the thoughts that go
through a woman’s mind as she struggles with whether or not to touch her lover. The poem
speaks of hope of possible heartbreak, but it does lend itself to permanence. The author has been
credited with writing two books and several poems. She makes the reader want to read the poem
and draw inspiration from it that may help them put into perspective their fears about loving even
when that love is not returned or taken away from you without notice. The author describes the
placement and details of the tattoos as if the reader is blind and depending upon someone to help
them with this open. The theme, setting and imagery of “First poem for You” gives the reader a
vivid presentation of what the author words are meant to invoke.
