Sing Sing Riot 1983
The constitutional rights of inmates incarcerated in state prisons have been the
controversy of prison reform, dating back to 1983. In 1983 inmates incarcerated in Sing Sing
correctional facility took 16 correctional officers hostage, the reason being, the inhumane
environment and treatment they claim they were receiving while serving their prison terms or
awaiting for a transfer. The inmates claim to be abused by officers, not having enough recreation
time, not being allowed visits from family and friends, from the request of officers for their own
