For some time, people have been astonished by the fact that the world is now more than
one-half urban, that’s 54 percent! Knowing this information, many people quickly assume that
most urban residents live in one of the huge cities, like New York, London, or Tokyo. This
actually isn’t the case. These 38 megacities, which are populated with at least 10 million
residents, only make up about 8.4 percent of the world’s population. It’s amazing to think about
because Tokyo, Japan itself is home to about 13.5 million people.
Tokyo itself has much history prior to the urban and population growth that we see today.
Tokyo, formally known as Edo, was just a small village in the 1720’s. When World War 11 was
taking place, Tokyo experienced its only major population decline. One of the reasons that there
was a major decline was just all of the damage that was being done to Japan from war. The
