To what extent is an individual’s identity defined?
Identity is the conception that people develop by themselves over the the
course of their lifetime. Identity is a complex and changing representation
of oneself. One’s identity can be determined by his or her own belief,
philosophy, or ideals. However, such values do not come at birth. They are
not innate but are acquired throughout his or her life. Our identities are
endlessly growing, changing, and adapting to everyday’s lives. Often, a
person’s identity is largely affected by his or her surroundings; people
develop their identity in interaction with external factors. There are three
approaches to the understanding of the establishment of individual’s
identity; a person’s circumstances, relationships, and social position. And
these are passively determined.
Our identity is predominantly affected by our circumstances. This mainly
involves national identity which also means that individual’s identity is
mostly determined by his or her regional specific features. Gendered,
linguistic, religious, and racial identity components interact each other to
make one unique characteristic which makes different from other regional
