1. Based on the path-goal theory, Art and Bob may be less effective because they are failing to
choose the paths that are best suited for their subordinates. With the path-goal theory it is not
necessary to focus on just one leadership style. In some situations, like these, it may be necessary to use
more than one style. Each supervisor, according to the path-goal theory, should be able to help
subordinates around any obstacles to achieve the goals or complete tasks. Carol has found a way to be
both supportive and directive. The only challenge with her method is that subordinates have difficulty
during shift rotation. This is only because of the different leadership styles on each shift.
2. The affect Art’s leadership style has on motivation with his respective subordinates is mostly
positive but because of the monotonous work the workers have not felt that Art understands their
situation. When Art provides direction and reminders for work that is already clear and repetitive the
workers loose motivation in their own ability to complete their work. Art may even consider providing
some sort of challenge to motivate his subordinates.
Bob’s leadership style affects his subordinate’s motivation in some instances positively as well,
but he lacks at a style that is much needed by his shift. With some of the challenging tasks that must be
completed by his shift, Bob needs to provide the workers with some direction. There is a need for
guidance during the time that the tasks for the time when complex computer programs are being
worked on.
Carol seems to have a good grasp on how to manage her subordinates. She has a well-rounded
leadership style or should I say styles. She appears to apply multiple leadership styles based on the
needs of her subordinates. Her style motivates her shift in a personable or supportive way, a directive
manner, and an achievement-oriented technique.
3. As I mentioned before, I would suggest that Art take out some of the direction since the job is
monotonous and try to provide some challenges in the day to day repetitive work. I think Bob may need
to provide a little more direction and guidance with complex tasks. As far as Carol, I do not see a need
