WWII, A Child Called It, and The Great Recession: Three Influences during Ten Years of My
Life
Thesis: Many people and events have shaped my life within the past ten years; three of these
include WWII, A Child Called It, and The Great Recession.
I. Many people and objects have helped shape me into the person I am today.
II. WWII has made it possible for women to have jobs that were once considered “men
jobs.”
A. America joined the war in 1941.
B. Since men were out at war, women had opportunities to work in factories and offices
C. The result of America joining the war has made it easier for women now and days to
get into the work force to show there is no such thing as a “man’s job.”
II. Author Dave Pelzer has made my love for children grow. His books really touch me
and make me want to help every child who is a victim of child abuse.
A. Dave Pelzer’s book, A Child Called It has made me want to help every child abused.
B. His personal life and reason for writing the book has made me a fan of his.
C. His faith, determination, and positive attitude has made many people understand that
some of the situations they encounter are not that bad compared to his.
III. The Great Recession has had the most personal effect on me.
A. Many Americans lost their jobs because of the huge economic decline.
B. My mother lost her job and we had to move in with my grandparents.
V. Collectively, WWII, A Child Called It, and The Great Recession has inspired me in so
many ways to become the person I am today, and make me want to help everyone in their time
of need.

Three Life Influences
Throughout my life, I have been influenced by many people and things, but there are
three events that influenced me in ways that no other events have. The first influential event that
occurred was World War II as it gave me a sense of empowerment as a woman. World War II
made it easier for a woman to get a job since they had a chance to show that they could do the
same work as the men did. Next was the publication of the book titled “A Child Called ‘It,’”
