I Believe You’re Never Too Good To Do Some Manual Labour.
My mom has always been a hard worker from a young age. She grew up on a farm her early teen years all
the way up to adulthood basically. My mom left her farm when she was just 17 years old. With her leaving home at
such a young age if there’s one thing she has taught me about life, it is that living is not cheap and your never too
good to get your hands dirty with some manual labour.
Being raised in a middle class single parent household felt very unfair to me at first. This is because all the
other kids around me got to go tons of different vacations on their Christmas or march break holidays as well as
got all the nice designer clothes that they wanted for Christmas or their birthday.
As I matured I learned that my mom wasn’t being unfair to me she was giving me everything she had. She
would provide a roof over my head at night, food in the fridge/cupboards, clothes on my body and a way of
transportation for when we went out. As a stupid teenager, though while growing up I got mad at a lot of the little
things I never got to feel the privilege of having. Such as getting the sweet designer clothes I liked, getting money
to go out with friends every weekend and having those great holiday vacations.
With my mom being such a hard worker one of her favourite sayings was “if you want it go work for it “.
so around the age of 13 I found a job working in some farm fields doing some general labour. This taught me from
a young age that you are never too good to do some physical labour occasionally to get what you want. Even
though it wasn’t my favourite thing to do on a Wednesday night or sometimes Thursdays it taught me the real
value of money.
While doing this job, I remember how exhausted I would be at the end of every day. Then on the
weekend I would usually go out and spend most of my money with friends. After doing that a couple times I could
a relate to how hard some people must work just to get that $10 bill for DQ ice cream or a meal at the pizza shop.
This was a humbling experience for me because it felt different for once not complaining about not getting the
things I wanted. But that I would complain about how it wasn’t fair how hard I was working for such little money. I
still thank my mom to this day for making me the hard worker I am today and for teaching me the lesson that you
may not love where you’re at in your life and you want to change you must make that change yourself and do not
rely on other people to do it for you.
