Essay Topic: Three things that affect social stratification in the Caribbean
Before I discuss the factors that influence stratification in society, I will first discuss
the concept of social stratification. Social stratification is simply defined as: ‘the hierarchical
arrangement of persons within a society based on individual attributes and lifestyles’. Every
human society on this planet has some form of stratification implemented. The Caribbean,
particularly has a stratification style that is mainly influenced by its previous history of
colonialism plantation slavery. Based on the plantation system, society was rapidly divided
due to differences in lifestyles and other key factors such as class, race and gender.
