Therapy for Foster Children
When a child first comes into therapy they may be hesitant to speak. Often times children in care have a
distrust from adults. You can build the trust with a variety of different ways. You can color with the child,
and ask to copy what the child is drawing. “This technique allows the child to have an experience of an
adult who views his actions as important and therefore aids in building rapport.” you can reframe
questions like why they need therapy, how long they will need it, or how often they have to come back.
Asking the child why do you think you are here, when do you think you will be done, and how often do
you think you should come. This can make the child feel like they have a choice and are not being
pushed into therapy.
