The proper way to go about a toddlers Autonomy versus shame and doubt is to give them
options, and guide them. They gain an independence when they are not being criticized for
the mistakes they make.
Emotional development
-Basic emotions are the universal emotions like happiness and sadness. Social smile
happens around six weeks, after getting used to the parents face they use it for their
pleasure for interaction with their parent. Stranger anxiety is where the baby is in a
situation with a new face, first response is fear but if the stranger handles them well and
the mother is close then fear turns into curiosity. Secure base for a child is the parent, the
child starts to explore and venture out but continue to go back to the secure base for
support emotionally. When the child looks for their secure base that are social Referencing,
which is when a child goes to a familiar person in an uncertain situation. Self-conscious
emotions are feelings that are higher order feelings like shame or embarrassment.
Emotional self-regulation is the act of controlling emotions so we can accomplish goals.
