Sanergy: Theory of Change
Sanergy fresh is a company based in Nairobi, Kenya. Their Business around revolves around a
franchisee model of selling Urine diverting dry toilet (named as Fresh Life toilets) with removable
cartridges and converting the waste generated to make energy, fertilizers, insect protein and animal
feed. The Franchisees are also responsible of collecting waste generated and transferring them to
waste treatment facility.
Input:
Here Sanergy plans to provide cheap sanitation facilities for Residents of communities without
access to adequate sanitation services in densely populated areas. Franchisees are local
entrepreneurs or community residents who are responsible for maintaining, managing, and
marketing the toilet. The users may have to pay a minimal amount of usage fee, but the cost is
considerably less than that of maintaining a traditional sewer system.
Output:
Due to the cheap and extensive networks of Sanergy toilets 1,20,000 people have been using
sanitation facilities through its 3,200 Fresh Life toilets. This has also empowered the local
communities to earn livelihood by managing the franchisee system.
Outcome:
Sanergy Fresh Life toilets (FLT) have managed to remove 10,000 tons of waste per year which helped
prevent spread of deadly diseases due to unhygienic practices in these communities. Sanergy has
also helped provide employment to 1500 people. This helped reduce unemployment levels in these
communities which usually had high unemployment rate of around 40%.
Here the Output of being able to access sanitation facilities has prevented people to do open
defection which has led to the outcome of 10,000 tons being removed from the community spaces.
