The problem being discussed here is that of lack of infrastructure to recycle waste and discarded
tyres (ELTS or End of life tyres) in India. India daily discards 2,75,000 tyres and imports about
3,00,000 tonnes of tyres every year from around the world. These tyres are often not properly
recycled or reused and end up in landfills. The tyres which are imported are used by pyrolysis
industry. Most of these industries do not comply to the standards set up by Central Pollution Control
Board(CPCB) guidelines(about 40% according to the 2019 report by CPCB) and even the ones who
comply are not sustainable as these processes often lead to spillages of carbon which affects the
respiratory system.
