Theoretical Perspectives
A basic, yet essential aspect in the study of sociology are theoretical perspectives sociologists use
in order to analyze and conduct research, to discern why things work as they do. Theoretical perspectives
can be described as assumptions about human social interactions that give a theoretical answer to
questions asked about society, and the type of responses that can be arrived at as a result. Often times one
conclusion of how the world works, as well as the people within it, is not suitable or accurate enough in
everyone’s opinion. In order to obtain a perspective of the world socially, it is essential to understand the
three main theories of sociological world perspectives as a system: structural functionalism, conflict
theory, and symbolic interactionism.
