The Wish Being Equal in Different World
Is it possible to live together peacefully even though they have the gap between rich and
poor? In LilianaHeker’s story “The Stolen Party” we are reminded of the real world and
the thin line that separates the lower class from the upper class. The story is about Rosaura,
the nine-year-old daughter of a woman who does chores for a wealthy family. Luciana, the
daughter of the house, invited Roaura to her birthday party. Rosaura thinks she was invited
as a friend, but she is just a little maid for them. Throughout this story, therefore, we see all
the discrimination and inhumane treatment (whether that is intentional or not) some people
feel it doesn’t matter to inflict on those whom they consider “not one of them.”
Rosaura’s mother says that she does not want her daughter to go to the party, because “it’s
a rich people’s party”. She tries to explain to her daughter that the people will look at her
as “the maid’s daughter” and not as a Luciana’s friend. But Rosaura is only nine years old
and “the smartest in her class”, and she feels that Luciana is her friend and would not hurt
her in any way. Rosaura chooses not to listen to her mother’s advice because she feels that
she knows what is best for her. Here we see that Rosaura’s mother is trying to make her
daughter aware of the difference between Luciana’s family and her own family. We can
presume that her mother has had an incident like this before in her life and wants to
prepare her daughter for disappointment. Therefore, as Rosaura’s mother tries to explain
that Luciana and her mother, Senora Ines, are different than they are, we become aware of
the differences between the classes.
Even though the families are of same descent, they live in opposite worlds. We definitely
can tell that Senora Ines has had a more successful life than Rosaura’s mother has. She
lives in a “beautiful place” and has maids and servants. She can afford anything that she
wants and lavishes her daughter with a party. On the other hand, Rosaura’s mother has a
job as a maid and can’t afford the luxuries of such a lifestyle. Here we can see the
discrimination that people are faced with concerning their social class and status. Rosaura,
still young and artless, hopes to one day be in the same place as her friend. Rosaura lives
