The West and the Rest: Discourse and Power
While reading this assessment of discourse, I couldn’t help but look for George Orwell’s
guidelines for modern writing. I think Stuart Hall was able to keep his writing in a way that
explained everything clearly without using any of the superfluous language Orwell talks about.
The fact that all of the terms are defined past their dictionary definition and referenced to other
writers gives Hall’s statements unambiguous.
Going in and starting the discourse by differentiating the idea of the West as a
geographical and “historical construct” set the example of taking apart what all the words used in
the discussion of “the West and the Rest” come to mean. This was a key aspect to Stuart Hall’s
