The value of works of art (in this case – paintings) is looked at from many di)erent points of view. What a
painting is worth? And how can we put a value on it?
“There are some paintings in the history of art that break
free, just as some human beings do, from the connes of
the particular lile world into which they were born. ..
They step out of their own time and place, and nd some
kind of universal and enduring fame. (57) “
Many believe the physical theory of artists leaving parts of their body and soul on the picture
they’ve painted. The more time they’ve spent, the more sense and feeling were put into the picture, the
more meaning it gives us then. Se2ling out the degrees of importance happens throughout the history
and it becomes so automatic for people to think and judge the works of art that many tend to just follow
the way of major thinking paths – “They become part of the common currency of names and images and
stories that a whole culture takes for granted” (57). It is all quite obvious with history. We have been told
about Brueghel’s talent and we should accept it. Yet this book gives us the moment of presence and we,
the readers, should guess the value of art. It is interesting to think of yourself as of the art historian while
reading this back in the day’s bestseller, to think of the value of art and get impressions from paintings
