Gun Control: The Smoking Gun
The issue of gun control continues to stir debate all across the nation. The issue has stirred
up a ton of controversy and the two sides seem further apart than ever. Of the estimated
300 million firearms owned by citizens in the United States, about 100 million are
handguns. Violence that occurs daily in this nation can be contributed to the use of
handguns. In my research, I will explore different ways of taking these guns out of the
hands of people committing crimes and eliminating some of these handguns all together.

BOOK
Doherty, Brian. Gun Control on Trial: Inside the Supreme Court Battle Over the Second
Amendment. Washington, D.C.: The Cato Institute, 2008. Database. Web. 5/3/2014
This book discusses the 2008 Supreme Court case, District of Columbia v. Heller. This
case was the first modern-day court case regarding one of the most controversial American
rights. Doherty also describes the history of gun control, the politics from the beginning of
the 20th century to today, and describes the culture of guns in America.
This book is a great resource to use when researching the history and controversy over gun
control in America. Doherty explains how the Second Amendment was promoted after
being written and Federalist James Madison’s idea that by Americans having the right to
bear arms, “we possess over the people of almost every other nation.” From the beginning,
there was debate over the amendment and it continued all through the rest of the 20th
century.
