The Self-Centered Judy Jones
In “Winter Dreams” the author, F. Scott Fitzgerald, introduces the readers to Judy Jones.
Judy Jones is a character with many different personality traits. She is seen as a “great beauty”
and has unique relationships with the men in her life. Judy Jones was born into a wealthy family
and grew up with many material objects. She learns throughout her life that money cannot buy
satisfaction.
Judy Jones was defined by her looks all of her life. At the age of eleven she was
described by Dexter as “beautifully ugly”. When Judy matured, she was said to be “arrestingly
beautiful”. Men made comments about her like, “My God she’s good looking” and “She has a
nice figure.” Judy Jones grew older and her looks changed along with the statements men made.
The comments changed to “oh, she’s alright.”
Judy Jones’s personality was self-centered. She would say, “I’m more beautiful than
anybody else.” She also was “entertained only by the gratification of her desires and by the direct
exercise of her charm.” Judy would play with men’s emotions like it was a game. She learned in
the end that what goes around comes around.
Just the same, Judy Jones’s relationship with men was one of a kind to say the least. She
never really cared much about the guys in her life. Therefore, she never developed real
