Major Writing Assignment #3 – The Analysis
In this essay, you will analyze a theme or issue from a text of your choosing
. For this class, a text
refers to any
object produced by a culture. Your text could be focused on a sporting event, a poem, a movie, a video game, a
presidential debate, a YouTube video, or something entirely different. Your essay should make a claim about
this theme or issue and support it with evidence from the text and the outside world. You must cite your text to
tie this theme/issue to larger issues outside of the text.
The essay must be 4-5 pages in length. Please follow all standard MLA formatting.
Rough Draft Due: Tuesday, October 6th before the start of class (10/6/20).
Final Draft Due: Thursday, October 8th before Midnight (10/8/20)
Late papers will receive points off for each day they are late.
Definition of Analysis: Analysis refers to examining the smaller parts or elements of a whole. For example, a
text might be analyzed according to its purpose, audience, genre, stance, media and design, and more. Analysis
also considers patterns of elements. A classical analysis looks at ethos, logos, and pathos to see how facts,
credibility, logic, and emotion are used to help make an argument. Regardless of what tools are used, analysis is
interested in first identifying what the argument is AND then looking at the various elements of audience,
purpose, ethos, pathos, etc. to see HOW and WHY the author made their particular argument.
