Introduction
The article [1] discusses about the expert gurus whose contribution in their specific field have led to the
development of “Total Quality Management.” The article also provides an insight into some of the famous
quality management tools that were put forth by the gurus and the role these tools play in Total Quality
Management system.
The ‘Four American Gurus’
The author, Oakland, in his book “Total Quality Management” which was released in 1989 mentioned
Deming, Juran, Crosby and Conway as the quality experts whose contribution made a significant impact
to the total quality management system. These American gurus ensured management commitment,
leadership, quality measurement, training and continual improvement were important aspects in Total
Quality Management system. However, Conway was considered as disciple of Deming and was the least
known. In the 1993 edition of the same book by Oakland, Conway was removed, and the title was changed
