The Purpose of Music
“Music is the language of the spirit. It opens the secret of life bringing peace, abolishing
strife”, rightfully stated by Kahlil Gibran, a Lebanese- American writer, poet, and visual artist
also considered a philosopher. Music is an essential part of our lives, from when we’re growing
up to when we’re old. It allows us to feel nearly or possibly all emotions that we experience in
this wild ride called “life”. More importantly, music serves many purposes. It allows us to
express emotion, serves as a source of spiritual and emotional uplifting, and it has the ability to
treat anxiety.
Firstly, music allows us to express and modulate emotion. Music increases the hormones,
serotonin, and endorphins in the blood which stabilize our mood, feelings of well-being and
happiness. Hence, the need for “letting loose” occasionally, and allowing the music to take you
away. Slow music quiets your mind and relaxes your muscles, making you feel soothed while
