The Problem with Food in the educational system
Today, the youthful generations including kids and teenagers are overweight for their
age. Recent reports have shown that twenty to twenty five percent of kids in school are
overweight. There is a problem with the food that is available to them while in school. Childhood
Obesity has become one of the most common diseases in children. (Food for thought analysis)
Something needs to be done to change the food provided to children to create a healthier
lifestyle. This will give families the opportunity to pay for a meal that is beneficial to their
child’s overall health and well-being. The issues that occur are: too much junk food is provided,
childhood obesity is occurring, and the costs for it. This problem will be fixed if the educational
system provides more healthy choices if the government and school systems allow for change.
The amount of junk food provided to children at a young age is ridiculous. People want a
change to this outrageous normality. The access to vending machines and other junk food
resources on campus outweigh the ones that are healthy. One explanation for this is elementary
aged kids are exposed to more junk food when they are on the same campus as older teenage
students. But, kids on campuses with younger elementary school children are not as likely to be
exposed to all the junk food. This should not be an excuse to why kids are eating unhealthy.
Middle schools and high schools should be providing just as many nutritious meals as the

elementary schools. Kids are still developing and their bodies need more fuel to make it
throughout the day. Many students are involved in extracurricular activities that can cause them
to be gone from home all day. In one example, the Aptos school system provides foods like
pizzas, Twinkies, slim jims, and sodas that were replaced with sushi, deli sandwiches, fresh soup,
and 100% real fruit juice drinks. The changes to the school’s snack bar was suggested by the
students of the middle school. A survey was done and the school concluded the new changes due
to the ideas and suggestions of present students who wanted to make these modifications.
(Healthier Choices…)
Childhood obesity is becoming a major health concern for our society. It is the most
important issue in discussing school lunches. Schools play an important role is the eating habits
