The Principled Poet: On the Morality of Edgar Allan Poe
Edgar Allan Poe is lauded as one of the most prominent, revolutionary poets of his time.
He is known for light love poems like “Annabel Lee” as well as sinister works of horror like “The
Tell-Tale Heart.” Poe’s contrasting and extensive catalogue fashions him as a multi-layered artist
which has secured him a place in literary history. This prominence, however, placed Poe’s works
at the center of extensive moral criticism. Though seemingly morally absent, within this paper, I
argue that despite his critics, Edgar Allan Poe’s morality can be seen throughout his works.
