The Pink Flamingo: A time of Changing Values
The 1950s was a time of cultural change in America. Old values were starting to be
shoved aside in favor of a more liberated society. The Pink Flamingo is no ordinary lawn
decoration, it can be seen as a symbol for this entire era: bold, distinctive and loud.
However in Price’s essay other qualities of the bird are hinted at through the use of
rhetorical strategies that represent the culture of the time on a whole. Price reveals that
American culture of the 1950s and 1960s is fake and ostentations through the use of
sarcasm, allusion and rhetorical question.
There is no question that the pink Flamingo is “fake” in a literal sense; it’s a plastic
board that ornaments lawns. However, through the use of sarcasm and allusion Price
reveals that the Flamingo symbolizes the lack of heritage and historical appreciation in
