“Pluto, Perception & Planetary Politics”
The article “Pluto, Perception & Planetary Politics” sheds light on the
controversial topic on the IAU’s decision to over turn Pluto from being a planet to a
dwarf planet. The issue at hand is how the public’s perception of science and role of
politics and relations in modern planetary astronomy has affected problems like
this. Although it is controversial, the IAU’s verdict is correct with all of its supporting
evidence proving Pluto to be a dwarf planet.
Among the various cases the IAU has made, it is that more than 1000 Kuiper
Belt Objects have been identified along with Pluto being in the same lineage. With
that said it should seem likely that Pluto is no different that the Kuiper Belt Objects
since it possesses similar qualities to those acknowledged. By 2000, objects that
were being distinguished were increasing in size. These objects were recognized
it goes with saying that after recognizing these other objects Pluto is no different.
