Mathilde and “The Necklace”
Guy de Maupassant’s short story, “The Necklace,” is a tragic tale of how one person’s
greed overcomes common sense. The two main characters (Mathilde Loisel and her husband) of
the story are of a lower-class people. The husband seems to be content with that. However, his
wife longs for the day that she is as rich as her friend, Madame Forestier. De Maupassant sends a
clear message to always find the good in your life no matter how bad you think you have it. De
Maupassant sends this message by making an example out of Mathilde when she borrows a
necklace and later loses it. She thinks this necklace is valuable, but it is just the opposite. Even
so, her not knowing this, she spends her whole life trying to replace it. She turns her household
into a hollow shell of its old self. The blame for this falls on Mathilde. There are a few main
moments in the story that prove just how ungrateful she is. One of these moments is the moment
