The Near Northwest Side Story
For my borders and migration project, I decided to read the book “The Near Northwest Side
Story: Migration, Displacement, and Puerto Rican Families”. I was attracted to the book due to
the fact that I have a family background of Puerto Rican descent and because my family does not
always identify with that side of the family, I took it upon myself to learn more about my culture.
I had already had a background of Puerto Rican history in Chicago since I did a contest entry on
The Chicago Puerto Rican Riot which occurred in the 60s. I felt that reading this would just
enhance the knowledge that I already had on the struggles of the people of my culture.
