The Musings of a Black Woman During Reconstruction
A year has passed since our “freedom” from slavery. If this is freedom, then freedom and
slavery do not differ from one another in the grand scheme of things. This “freedom” is a more
glamorous cage filled with promises of a better life, but it is a cage nonetheless.
If this is freedom, why does it not feel like the freedom we had hoped and prayed for?
Yes, we have our own house, leased to us by our previous master, but was this truly different
from our living arrangements as slaves? We earn our own crops now, and every bit of it goes to
