The movie Beginners makes people ponder the relationship between father and son, man
and woman and friends. The name of the movie already got me to think what it is about.
After watching the movie, however, the enigma was unfathomed.
The word “beginner” in English has the meaning of “starter,” or an “amateur”— someone
who is not a professional. I fully agree with this concept of the movie because in real life,
everyone is an amateur in relationships. Human relationship can be the most complicated
issue other than surviving since it requires interactions; humans also happen to be the
intelligent beings that have the most complicated emotions so interactions can be depended
on emotions. There are a lot of emotions that humans bear: love, hate, surprise, confusion,
anger, contempt etc. In the movie Beginner, the emotions that these people bear are “love”
and “confusion”; either can initiate the cause of the other for the characters in the movie.
The main character, Oliver Field, is going through a hard time learning about his father
Hal— his stage-four cancer and his relationship with a young man. Oliver cannot believe
that Hal is doing this after Georgia, Oliver’s mother, has died five years earlier. He finds
himself hard to accept this new image of a family; partly because he was raised in this
typical fifties family and partly because of his thoughts against Hal after the “death note.”
He struggles because he has met a French girl who ran away from her home because the
