The Melting Pot in Today’s Society
“America’s a melting pot, all races, cultures, religious choices ” (Woods). This quote came
from Tiger Woods who refers his ethnic background as a “Cablinasian”- a person with
Caucasian, Black, American Indian, and Asian ancestry. His statement indicates that the
melting pot has perpetuated its way into Woods’s life. The concept of the “melting pot”
comes from the assimilation of the immigrants in America and it describes how the
American society is homogeneous in terms of the culture and ethnicity. The melting pot is
indeed a huge factor in America during the rising of immigration and it is still accurate
today.
In Letters of an American Former, De Crevecoeur describes America as an “asylum” where
“the poor of Europe have by some means met together” (De Crevecoeur). This statement
reflected the legacy of the false promise from the gilded America where “land, bread,
protection and consequence” weren’t exactly provided (De Crevecoeur). However, the
uprising America surprisingly did the trick of attracting defectors, refugees, slave trades
and hideaways from around the globe. In contrast of the harsh living conditions, America
did however; give these desperate immigrants a dream – the American dream. This dream
helped sealing cracks and extending the mass of De Crevecoeur’s melting pot as time goes
by. Therefore, the early immigrants startled and gave us a chance to preserve and purify
the melting pot until the world dooms.
