The Lady with the Lamp
Florence Nightingale was one of the first heroic nursing leaders in her time. Born May
12th 1820 in Florence, Italy she was an English homeschooled girl by her wealthy family and
expected to marry young to another family of wealth. However in her teenage years she had
other plans. “A calling from God, to help and care for others” would later turn her into one of
the most important people for the Crimean War in 1854.
Even though, at the time, nursing was not a respected profession, Nightingale expressed
her feelings in becoming a nurse to her parents and denied her of her wishes. With conviction,
